Almost all gas blowers use inefficient two-stroke engines. The South Coast Air Quality Management District blames leaf blowers for “5.6 tons of hydrocarbon emissions per day” in Los Angeles. The
loud noise affect’s our children, our pets, our wildlife and our quality of life. Their portability, unlike electric corded blowers, (electric blowers are not illegal), has caused them to be used with abandon. The excessive particulate matter (PM) that becomes airborne as a result affects the health of us all. Particulate Matter (PM) are dust particles, dried bird/animal feces, pesticides, insecticides, street dirt that can contain lead and carbon, allergens such as molds, pollen, and animal dander. PM is particularly harmful to children, the elderly, and those with cardio vascular and pulmonary problems, including asthma. Once airborne, there is no way to contain PM. Operators of gasoline powered blowers suffer the most through hearing loss and respiratory problems. Many users do not
even wear protective eyewear, ear protection, or masks. Prolonged or repeated exposure can lead to chronic conditions in the future. Leaf blowers distribute debris and Particulate Matter “PM”)* for long distances. If your neighbor is using a blower you and your family are at risk from the fumes and the airborne dust.
Gas blowers are against the law. Farm Feliz seeks, through outreach to encourage people to obey the law. In addition through our online reporting system, we accept complaints which are forwarded to the City of Los Angeles, Bureau of Street Services. Street Services follows up with a warning letter copied to the City Attorney. If you feel that you have no hope in convincing your neighbor to cease the use of gas blowers, then, we encourage you to use this system. Your contact information is kept confidential.
