If each of us would only sweep our own doorstep, the whole world would be clean. To Sweep = using a broom, not a gas blower.

The plastic ball has been transferred to the County of Los Angeles. They plan to add their plastic garbage to this and look to create the worlds largest plastic bag ball.

B Y O B - Bring your own bag

This ball of plastic bags is made up of 7,190 bags collected in Silverlake in 2009 by volunteers of the Green Committee of the Silverlake Chamber of Commerce.

The U.S. uses 90 Billion plastic bags each year. Over 100,000 marine animals DIE every year from PLASTIC entanglement!

Plastic bags are:

  • Made from petroleum, a nonrenewable resource.

  • A serious litter problem

  • Non-biodegradable, breaking into smaller particles BUT never fully disappearing.

  • Mistaken for food by marine animals (particularly sea turtles).

  • A major part of waste in our landfills.

SIMPLE SOLUTIONS TODAY:

-Bring your own reusable shopping bag.

-Ask the stores you shop at to get rid of plastic bags or support laws that tax plastic bags

In Ireland, a tax on plastic bags was introduced. Essentially, each plastic bag handed out costs the consumer an extra 15 cents. After the tax scheme began in March 2002, it is estimated the plastic bags available at stores have been decreased by 90%.

The ball is on loan for a month and is located at King Middle School, Farm King at 4201 Fountain Avenue. The students on campus get to see first hand, what 400 bags per second ( california estimate) can add up to.
We ask them to stand at the exhibit for eighteen seconds. That's how long it takes California to make this ball of bags.
